CELEBRATING AFRICAN AND AFRO-DIASPORIC PERFORMANCE
Born and raised in the Lower Southside of Providence Rhode Island, Saulo Castillo has been dancing professionally for over six years. Saulo is the Founder and Executive Director of Rawkin Rhythmix, a research and performance Hip Hop group based out of Brown University and the Greater Rhode Island Community that critiques, challenges, studies, and learns from past and contemporary dance forms.
Before this, Saulo was a Founding member of Project 401, one of Rhode Islands forefront Hip Hop Groups officially founded in 2010 by Brown University student Pierre Arreola. With Project 401 Saulo performed an average of 3 times per week, as well as created and managed free after-school programming for youth and adults of all ages.
Saulo travels regularly to compete in several dance competitions and events across the US, including Philadelphia, New York, Massachusetts and Florida. Currently he holds the 2016 championship title for the intercollegiate Breakdance competition Battle for Boston, held at Harvard University each year.
Saulo’s creative practice revolves around youth development, particularly working to better the lives of under-served/at- risk youth in the Providence community and the greater New England area. Saulo has also worked as a teaching artist at several non-profit organizations such as Providence City Arts, D’Abate Elementary School, the Providence After School Alliance, and New Urban Arts.
